THE MAN WHO RACED THE TUBE | WOULD HAVE BEEN CAKE WITH SPEEDBOT

Posted by J. Fallhowe, CSCS

James Heptonstall had a dream.  To race the London Tube (London's Subway) and win.  With a Go-Pro strapped to his head James burst through the opening Tube door and attempted to beat it to the next stop.  Along the way he dodged oncoming Tubers, sprinted across busy streets and leapt down flights of stairs.

Were we impressed?  Absolutely!  Beating the Tube, we imagine, is no easy feat.  Do we think he could he have done it faster if he had trained with SpeedBot?  Definitely!

If James had trained with Speedbot he would have had time for a cup of tea and nap.  Okay, maybe we're exagerating a bit.  He probably would have only had time for a nap.

Take a look at the man vs. Tube and see what SpeedBot would have done to make him faster.

TACKLING WITHOUT HELMETS TO PREVENT CONCUSSIONS IN FOOTBALL

Posted by J. Fallhowe, CSCS

A recent poll showed that nearly 50% of parents don't want their sons playing football.  National concern about concussions and the long lasting effects of head trama are a growing concern.  Advances in football helmet technology are working to make helmets safer and reduce injury.  Helmets, like cars, now come with a safety rating.  Five starts being the mark of the safetest helmets.

Some teams are taking a more out of the box apporach to protect their athletes and prevent head injuries. The University of New Hampshire Wildcats are attempting to reduce head injuries by tackling without helmets.  No, you didn't read that wrong.  They are tackling one and other without helmets to prevent injury.

HOW TO GET BIGGER CALVES WITH 3 EXERCISES

Posted by J. Fallhowe, CSCS

Dec 10, 2014 11:20:00 AM

To increase calf size, power and strength, we need to have an intelligent plan for training. Sure, knocking out reps on a Smith machine will help increase calf size, but after a while, we'll plateau.

HOW TO GET BIGGER CALVES - AND AVOID THE PLATEAU:

In this post, we'll cover three things:

  1. Muscle Anatomy - A quick but important overview of muscle anatomy so that we understand how to properly train our calves for size.
  2. Progressive Overload - Introducing calf exercises at the appropriate time in our training will ensure that we get maximum results.
  3. Type-II Fibers - The importance of recruiting Type-II muscle fibers.  For more on recruiting Type-II muscle fibers, check out this post.

Abs are all the rage these days.  If you don't have them, you probably wish you did.  Abs have come to represent the pinnacle of fitness.  If you have abs, you're fit, you're a gladiator, you're an animal.  If you don't, well you'd better get to work.

But does having a visible six pack improve athletic performance?

THE BEST SUPPLEMENTS FOR ATHLETES

Posted by J. Fallhowe, CSCS

Nowadays, it seems like there is always a newer, bigger, better supplement hitting the shelves. Advertisements urge athletes to take this with that, stack this and stack that.  Like Dr. Seuss's The Cat In The Hat, the supplement world has become more bizarre and confusing... and that's a fact!  Most athletes end up scratching their heads saying "wait...what?"

So how can we figure out this supplement mystery?

Luckily the answer is pretty simple.  We need to follow the bread crumbs of research to help point us in the right direction.  From there, we can validate supplement claims not based on the juiced up model in the ad but on the evidence gathered and evaluated.

Let's take a look at the best supplements for athletes.

Explosive power is what separates average athletes from great athletes.  If you've ever competed in athletics, you know how important explosive power is.  The ability to clean and jerk heavy loads, run an impressive 40 yard dash time or jump out of the gym are all the result of explosive power.  A lot of athletes lift but are unable to transfer weight room strength into explosive performance on the field.

So, what's the secret to developing explosive power?

MIXING IT UP - TAKING PROTEIN TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

Protein - everyone's doing it.  Sure, it can be a little messy, sticky and downright nasty at times.  You know that protein laced shaker you tossed in your back seat two weeks ago.  It's become a science experiment.  You've unknowingly created the optimal environment for cultivating some of the most unique and awful smells imaginable.  By the way, you might want to get some air freshener before your next date.  Putting the protein unpleasantries aside, there are many benefits to protein supplementation. New research is helping us get more out of our power packed scoop of protein.  Recent studies suggest that combining protein sources can prolong amino-acid transport into muscle tissues, making you bigger and stronger than supplementing with one protein source alone.

Let's mix things up and create an amino super army!
